Parent Partnership Services - exemplifications of minimum standards
This document sets out the Government's expectations of good practice in the provision of impartial Parent Partnership Services. The exemplars illustrate a range of practice from the minimum to best practice. It is intended that Parent Partnership Services and Local Authorities will use theexemplars as a self-review tool in order to ensure that services are delivered 'at arms-length' and to build parents' confidence in the advice and support they receive from PPS. These exemplifications were informed by the work previously done in the South West on the development of Regional Standards and the revised (2007) version of the standards are already cross-referenced to them. Speech, language and communications review
A major review into the provision of services for children and young people with speech, language and communications needs has been launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. It will be led by John Bercow, MP, and is due to report in Summer 2008. Further information is available here.

The revised National Contract for the Placement of Children and Young People in Day and Residential Independent and Non-maintained Special Schools is now available. Aiming High for Disabled Children: Better Support for Families
The government has published the report of the disabled children’s review. Aiming High for Disabled Children: Better Support for Families contains a funding package of £340 million for the period from 2008 - 11. Key elements of the package include:
- a specific grant of £280m to deliver a step change in the provision of short breaks
- £35m to pilot accessible childcare
- £19m for a Transition Support Programme, modelled on the Early Support programme but focussed on young disabled people in transition to adulthood
- £5m to help more parents get involved in shaping services at a local level, including through parents forums.

Monitoring the Effectiveness of SEN Provision
Monitoring the Effectiveness of SEN Provision is a new publication by the West Midlands Regional Partnership. The first part of the report includes case studies and a summary of West Midlands Local Authority practice in monitoring the effectiveness of SEN provision. The second part of the report consists of a self evaluation schedule for use by local authorities to review their own practice in monitoring the effectiveness of SEN provision.
